Some helps but I think we've got a bit too many (maximum) per character. I was thinking about cutting it down to three max instead of five max.
Have the bold numbers at something like 30, 20, 10?
What does everyone else think?

Or pick up insanities at 45, 30, 15...

Better spaced out to give a chance for an insanity or two without near imminent character NPCness. But once you get around 15/10, you are looking at "help my precious mind" territory. Few people play "all the way down" as I put it.
But yeah 45/30/15 or 50/30/10.

Agree with only the three. 5 is too hard to manage and ends up detracting from the game.

They're spaced out as far as possible and you get to have one after just 5 san loss. Any other thoughts on this?

Have the bold numbers at something like 30, 20, 10? What does everyone else think? 45/30/15 is the most elegant/symmetrical/intuitive. Another option would be 40/30/20. Maintains the current interval, but no one starts with an insanity, and as Thad put it "Few people play all the way down". When they do, no one lasts long below ten anyway.

You bring up a good point on 40/30/20. OK - let's go with this: I am all in favor of reducing it to three insanities max per character. Characters suffering currently from more than three (JANA) will be reduced to just three. Now to figure out 45/30/15 vs 40/30/20.

Between those two? I vote 40/30/20. Reason? 15 seems too low to pick up a new one. At 15, your character is gonna have very little time left to role play it.
You might split the difference and go 45/30/20 though, to increase the severity of starts with 50 SAN. I know it's not simple, but again, it leaves lots of play time to really savor how fucked up your character is, and has an exponential feel to it. You get crazier faster and faster, rather than in a nice, neat, steady line.

I'd like to keep the numbers consistent for ease - either every 15 or every 10.
As to someone losing their character quick after 15 SAN - I think Jana's character (correct me if I'm wrong) has been under that and clawed her way back up.
Also - a quick rules clarification. Let's pretend that 40/30/20 was chosen and Rock got down to 30 SAN. He now has two different crazy things. Cool. He does a bunch of heroic shit over the next few missions and claws his way up to 60 SAN.
If he got 'psychoanalysis' from someone (NPC or a PC who acted less crazy than he did) he could either get rid of those two insanities he has or diminish them to non- mess you up quirks. Should he again dip to 40 SAN, the 40 SAN one 're-activates' and Rock is all crazy again.
People seem to forget they can get help.
Note that Jana's character is a super shrink - but she is so nuts that I'm thinking anyone who she attempts to treat - don't think it would help.
Jana: "Feel better now?" Rock: "Why thank you doctor!" Jana: "Great - now let's go skin some people!"
No.

Now I am 37. 15 SAN as a new insanity mark seems OK to me... But thats just me, sinking in the san points quickly, then getting back up... Note that Jana's character is a super shrink - but she is so nuts that I'm thinking anyone who she attempts to treat - don't think it would help. Jana: "Feel better now?" Rock: "Why thank you doctor!" Jana: "Great - now let's go skin some people!" No. I don't know what you're talking about, I'm a great psychologist. My patients are often so calm and quiet after a session nobody hears from them ever again!

I think I like 45/30/15 a bit better, maybe because it's more spread out? On the other hand it's true that going under 15 means you're probably losing the character soon...

Well, that will mean that players usually only have to worry about RP'ing TWO insanities and if you see someone pick up a third you know they are soon going flush!
