Name: Resistance to (element)
Casting time: 1 minute Range: Self Duration: Sunrise/sunset MP cost: 4mp
Description: Bumps damage down by one toward a specific element. Caster must have a spell at least rank 2 in the element they are defending against. Example: Joe has lightning magic up to the second rank - he can use this spell to cast 'resistance to lightning' - any lightning spells cast upon him are decreased by one on the damage track table. Stacks with magic and non-magic armor.

Does it only affect magic or also natural? eg could it be used to reduce damage from a fire if you were stuck in a burning house and trying to escape? Or reduce electric damage from an electrified floor etc Would it help against something like a taser or cattle prod?

So does this spell mean you just get it for free as soon as you get 2 ranks in an element school?

So does this spell mean you just get it for free as soon as you get 2 ranks in an element school? "Caster must have a spell at least rank 2 in the element they are defending against." Let me try a rephrasing: "In order to protect against an element, the caster must be familiar with it enough to have the second ranked spell in that element's tree." Better? Yes, Pete, I can see it protecting against the camp fire, cow taser, etc.

Oh. Okay.
So as an example, you would need Extinguish Fire + Fireproof in order to get Elemental Resistance Fire. Right?

So this is just one spell that can be cast in different modes then?
Or is it a separate skill for each flavor?

separate skill for each flavor sounds like all of the other skills so that would fit in better.

so... does that mean magic effects bypass regular armor? because why not use an improved armor spell instead... they don't stack... making the spell useless and hard to get

so I have a suit of armor which gives me a +1 bump to incoming dmg. I cast magic armor increasing my amor to 2 bumps against incoming dmg. What is the difference between that and getting the fire specific spell which has all sorts of prequisites. and is limited to only fire?

Which spell gives you two bumps? Sorry - not trying to be dense - just confused here.
As I understand it: Normal armor 1 bump. Magical armor 1 bump. Special armor against a specific element 1 bump.
Hence, you can get normally a total of 2 bumps total. If you use this special armor, you can have two bumps unless someone hits you with the specific element you are protected against then it is 3 bumps total.

that's what I was looking for... the 3 bumps... you always said you can only have 2 bumps from armor... if this gives you 1 more that's what I was looking for.

Ah - I get it. Yeah. This is a little extra.
If you have this protection and are vulnerable to that element, then the extra bump they get (for hitting you with what you are vulnerable to) and you having special protection (against what you are vulnerable to) would be a wash and you'd be back to the regular 2 bumps (armor, magic).

Name: Resistance to (element) (Note - this spell would appear in each different 'elemental' tree giving resistance toward that element) [Credit: Chris, Freddy, Pete, Scott]
Casting time: 1 minute Range: Self Duration: Sunrise/sunset MP cost: 4mp
If someone is using the element you have defended against to harm you, this negates the damage bump they would get from using said element. Example: If someone casts a fire damage buff on their weapon and you have cast a 'resistance to fire' on yourself, this negates that fire damage.
Is this wording more clear? Also, a new standard spell for all of the elements getting rid of the 'you must know at least this much in an element' etc.
