Although having three categories of pistol is tempting, honestly if you can fire one, you can fire all. Not sure why that is - probably a muscle memory thing. Before my vision started going, I was 'fairly decent' with a normal (slug throwing) pistol - and about the same with a paint ball gun, laser (light) pistol, etc.
Thinking the way it might work is simply pistol, rifle/ar, SMG, shotgun (note - to the best of my knowledge they don't have futuristic versions of the shotgun that are really any different than say a blaster rifle).
Those four categories (well, three really) would cover all normal carry around weapons.
For the heavy weapons, it would still get more specific - ship mounted boom boom (I don't care if it is a machine gun or a rapid fire laser), something that throws small explosives (like a grenade launcher), etc. Fairly specific. Having personally fired both a machine gun and a grenade launcher, no they are no where close to the same. But I am willing to grant that a futuristic grenade launcher and a Vietnam style thumper may have enough overflow to let the two skills be the same.

Given what's happened with vehicles, I can see weapons going the same way, although you may want to split this out as a separate thread. Given that a lot of guns are "point and click" (as it were) grouping them together does make a lot of sense.

Moved to its own thread.
I think Pistol, Rifle, Shotgun sounds about right for the "normal" weapons. It's certainly quite a buff for all the players (we can finally use those damn laser pistols). Of course, if a pistol is super unique for whatever reason you can always say "no, this is its own thing".
Not sure about Heavy Weapons as I don't know what kind of categories you're looking at. There's a lot of things which could be considered "heavy".

Good point - if someone feels like making a list of different heavy weapons (Scott! - or any one) we can group them up.

You can cheat by using other peoples lists. Eg www.writeups.org/heavy-weapons-dc-heroes-mutants-masterminds/ which has pictures of examples of below Light machinegun Squad automatic weapon Man-portable minigun Disposable infantry rocket launcher Demolition Infantry Rocket Launcher Flamethrower 20mm anti-tank rifle Heavy machinegun

NOT A CLUE
20mm anti-tank rifle Cannon Artillery mortar?

I could see "Siege Engineer" being a skill. Not necessarily as a Heavy Weapon skill.

I can see it for some of the weapons (aim and fire ones) but don't think it's really needed for things like 'battering rams'.

True. But a Siege Engineer could craft the battering ram.

Yes, that and probably carpentry. Maybe some metal work for the ram's head.
But for the topic at hand
(Automatic group) Heavy Machine Gun/Anti Aircraft Gun/Minigun
(Launcher group) Missile Launcher/Bazooka/Grenade Launcher/RPG
(Sprayer group) Flamethrower/Pepper Spray (backpack tank style)/Acid?/Poison?
(Indirect fire boom group) Mortar/Artillery/Howitzer
(Direct fire boom group) Cannon/Anti Tank Gun/Recoilless Rifle
(Medieval siege weapons) Ballista Battering Ram Catapult Scorpio Siege Tower Trebuchet
I'm wondering if it could be made into a different kind of pull down menu.
Full auto
modern futuristic
Indirect fire
primitive modern futuristic
Etc.
