There were reports at the embassy of "rabid" animals acting unnaturally north of San Angeles, around Bakersfield. Freddy, Dana, and I looked into it. They are actually possessed. The whole thing reminds me of the story of "Legion" in the Bible. We checked out the "demon" cave between SA and Bakersfield and were able to confirm that the "demon" that various members of our group had previously released is behind it. Travelling through the wilderness in that area, you will probably be attacked by a mob of random animals. If you kill them, the spirit releases and searches out a new host. We've deduced that they are "leveling up", trying to increase their power by inhabiting smarter and smarter creatures. Presumably their goal is to work their way up to sapient creatures and then come south and obliterate SA in thanks for freeing them.

Some things we learned.
The entity hates gold. If you touch gold to a possessed creature, it will howl in pain.
Saying the entity's name (need to consult notes to give it to you) three times and/or backwards had mixed results. A few times it caused the entity to leave its current host (leaving it dead) and try to possess the speaker.
Trying to capture a dispossessed spirit in a receptacle (even a gold-lined one) did not work.
We probably need the magic gold collar from the original "demon" in embassy storage.
The ghost guardian from the "demon" cave is still there. You can ask it questions, but it wasn't very helpful.

Have you tried finding an old priest and a young priest?

We probably need the magic gold collar from the original "demon" in embassy storage. I thought you were carrying that around with you. Also the collar's main function was to stop the wearer from killing themselves, just as a reminder.

Have you tried finding an old priest and a young priest? We figured Christian exorcism wouldn't be worth pursuing since Christianity doesn't seem to be a thing in Beastkin.

A little bit more information…
The name of the Demon who split up into several smaller bits and is possessing the animals is called Slieker Vendaar (unsure on the spelling). Possessed animals are effectively "dead". Their organs etc are all black-ish and inedible. Eating them may cause severe indigestion and diarrhoea. We managed to draw out one of the spirits without killing the animal by chanting the Demon's name three times, though this may not always work and it may have mixed results, so do not rely on it for consistency. As soon as the spirit came out, the animal dropped dead, hence why we believe they are already "dead". Yes, zombies. Sure. Whatever.
The gold had more of an effect on them while they were still possessed. It had much less effect when they were in spirit form. It did not seem to harm the spirit at all – it just sort of pushed it a little. We theorised that the gold has some sort of "containment" property, which would explain why the Demon was chained up in solid gold. Perhaps it prevents the spirit from leaving the body it is in. Just a theory.
Some ideas on how to deal with it…
1. Figure out a way to suck out all the Demons from all the animals and put them into one vessel, then either destroy it/them permanently or figure out a way to seal it away (I really doubt the gold method will work as they used A LOT of gold to imprison the Demon originally, around 1000 coins worth. Plus they had to use the collar to prevent the Demon from killing himself).
2. Find something which harms the spirits. Feed that something to the animals and see if the spirit is destroyed. Then it's a matter of feeding that something to all of the animals, which will be a pain but with the help of the locals can possibly be done.
3. Find a young priest and an old priest…
Some other information which might be good to find out if any of you are budding demonologists is to figure out if these spirits reproduce/replicate or if there are a finite number of them. If it's the latter, then some of the ideas above are simply a matter of finding them all. If they replicate however… there is no telling how many there are. So even if you somehow manage to eradicate all of them, if there is one still left… it might turn into more over time, so make sure you get rid of all of them and know this for a fact 100%.

Do we know if these demons can inhabit humanoid or higher intelligence or is it just animals? If they can, do we know of anything else other than gold that has a protective nature?

For now they can only inhabit animals. They are essentially trying to build up enough power to eventually move up to humanoids. One of them tried to possess me but it wasn't strong enough and I managed to shit it out. They also don't seem to go for other animals that are already possessed.
You can easily distinguish them from normal animals as they have black eyes and are usually acting rather crazy.

Hey ya bunch of loser's, who do I have to screw to get a drink around here?
So this shit show at Barker-whatever. This Slieker Vendaar dick split into loads of smaller dicks and entered tons the animals around the area. In the barn are like 35ish of the 60 odd possessed animals in cages when we first got there, the rest we "experimented" on. First thing we observed is that they are petty magic and are a kind of poison/disease. Upon curing magical disease/poison (which is bloody hard because magic sucks here) the creature was freed of the possession and no black smokey crap came out, so we think it destroyed the fragment, rather than banish it. That was pretty much the highlight of the outing, the first 10 minutes there. We then tried a bunch of crap, most did nothing, but we are whittling it down! We tried containment in glass, ceramic, wood, pentagram, salt, pentagram and salt, blood pentagram and salt, all no go. We tried curing with various picked plants, belladonna, Laudanum and tonics, no dice. We tried to see if they had an aversion to silver, wood, fire, sunlight, iron and blood, nada. Gold still is the only substance these buggers dislike. We tried cutting up the wispy smoke with a sword that can affect incorporeal beings, it just kept halving the bloody thing, but after 20 odd swings it was gone, not sure if gone gone or just split into hundreds of pieces. We got four/five unaffected critters and killed one possessed around them, it seemed to just take host in only one of the critters, so we hoping by some crazy luck this means they don't split and replicate naturally. We took one affected outside out of eye shot of the others and applied the very small amount of gold we had to it, it had an issue with it but the others in the barn did not, so we don't believe the parts are linked, if they ever were, anymore in that kind of way. All the locals are hicks, no elves to be found for information. We suggest whoever takes this on next, DO RESEARCH BEFORE HAND. It ended kinda darkly, we kinda kidnapped a delivery boy and purposely got him possessed, he's in a cage in the barn, Locals know and was told cock and bull story which they believed, idiots. So, to surmise, we need to find a cure that can be spread over a massive space or find a way of attracting all the evil bits over a massive area to one point where they can be bound/destroyed in a zone where magic works for shit. Maybe try talking to Ratboy as we now call him, maybe he would have settled into his new skin suit by then. Good Luck!!

We suggest whoever takes this on next, DO RESEARCH BEFORE HAND I don't even know what to begin research on. It sounds like you've already done a lot of your own research and experimentation. we kinda kidnapped a delivery boy and purposely got him possessed, he's in a cage in the barn, Locals know and was told cock and bull story which they believed, idiots So… You got one of the locals possessed for what reason? What are we meant to do with him?

What are we meant to do with him? 1. We came close to finding some possible information on this particular demon through an obscure demonology book, but we would have had to summon another demon to get said information, we said bugger that! Maybe with some research in the right place on his name or his description/mannerisms might shed some light on this cock bag. 2. Ummm, at this point we had got into the really bazaar "experimental" phase of our testing, it was kinda a spur of the moment situation. Do as you see fit Freddy, train him to dance for you amusement? A caddy for Doc? Taxidermy practice for Mildred? Interrogate him, take him to another zone and cure disease/poison on him? Whatever you want Freddy, have fun! Good Luck!

Another thought just bloody occurred, you probably want to do your upmost to get yer hands on that original collar prison! If nothing more than it's a but load of gold, it also might help in other ways, maybe something worth re-analysing or its likeness might be mentioned in research of history/legends. Might be a key part to all this crap! Good Luck!

Could you take them beyond the skull wall and kill them if they are affected by lesser magic?
Why not cure disease/poison on all of them if it seemed to work?
Try taking one of the possessed animals to a destroy magic zone such as Guri?
