You know why 'mapping' started?
Because of Gygax silly GM vs the players 'let's hide secret doors without any fucking description or foreshadowing' silly shit.
Otherwise, nobody cares.
For me, if it is necessary to 'map' something, I do it in 'bubble map' form.
Kitchen ----> dining room -----> hallway

servant's quarters
Etc.
Hence, if you ask me 'how far is it', expect some vague shit like 'far', 'not far' or 'I fucking don't know'.
I will not hand you a map after you've explored everything. I may add to mine later then say "You have the feeling there may be more to the servant's quarters than you originally thought." You're not being penalized - I just can't come up with clever shit as fast as I'd like.
Hence, in the rare areas where you may wish to map things, I'd suggest a rough bubble map.
Special: Maze.
If there is something I describe as a 'maze', getting through it requires (usually) a direction sense or navigation roll. The PC's may come up with other clever shit but in general if you fail whichever one of those two rolls you choose to make, the GM will either send you in a random or the wrong direction - at their whim. Either do clever shit or bring someone with you who has one or both of those skills.
After the PC's have been through the 'maze' often enough that they are 'old hands' at it (do it a lot) then the GM will stop asking for rolls for that unless they are feeling ornery.
