Prolong Spell Casting time: Free action (only as part of casting another spell) Range: Self Duration: Instant MP cost: 2 Increase the unit of measure of the target spell's duration by one place; E.G., rounds -> minutes -> hours -> days -> weeks -> months If the spell instead has a duration of "until sunup/sundown", it increases to 1 week, but you must make an ESSx3 roll or lose it each sunup/sundown.
I want prolonging another spell to take more time. Possibly a lot more time.
And magic points.
If a caster wants to change an 'instant spell' into a 'concentration spell', they should be paying the same number of MP as the first spell cost but per round. The advantage? They don't have to keep recasting the spell.
Instead of:
Cast - effect (two rounds)
Cast - effect - effect (three rounds)
See what I mean?
I think one of the things we'll have to look at very closely with this spell is 'where can it be abused'.
Also, I don't mind if the MP cost per unit of measure costs crazy amounts of MP. Rituals, MP storage devices and all that shit are out there.
Also, anything like "If the spell instead has a duration of "until sunup/sundown", it increases to 1 week, but you must make an ESSx3 roll or lose it each sunup/sundown." we can't use as it violates Logan's rule #1.

We could go even simpler. Dectuple time and 2mp for double duration?
Prolong Spell Casting time: Free action (only as part of casting another spell) Range: Self Duration: Instant MP cost: 2 The target spell's duration is doubled, but it's casting time is dectupled (x10).
I like this because it's "prolonged" on both ends.

Yeah, I saw that, I'm just not seeing how it could be very interesting or useful. What spell would you even cast that on?

Hmm. What if you could extend the duration of a passive spell by concentrating on it?
Prolong Spell Casting time: Free action (only as part of casting another spell) Range: Self Duration: Instant MP cost: 2 You extend the duration of a non-concentration spell by concentrating on it. Once you break concentration, the spell's normal duration starts counting down.

Thinking that might be a bit too open ended. Can you sit there and concentrate on a damage spell? It's non-concentration. No, let's not go there. Might have to let that one die.

It has to first have a duration to extend the duration. This excludes instant duration spells. I could have worded it more clearly in the spell text.
Prolong Spell Casting time: Free action (only as part of casting another spell) Range: Self Duration: Instant MP cost: 2 You extend the duration of a non-concentration spell by concentrating on it. Once you break concentration, the spell's normal duration starts counting down. This does not work on instant duration spells.

I will have to go through the spells to see if this is open to too much abuse or not.
