Fair enough. Assuming the data you are stealing isn't more than 100 MB and that you are able to get access to it in the first place You would still need to find where it is on the machine etc. Can't just walk up to a computer and say "I want to download x into my brain."

Or could you do:
GM: The computer is well over 100mb. Player: I just take some of it then dump it into the ether. GM: Warning lights begin flashing and sirens start going off. Player: Fuck your nuclear power plant! I'm out!

"Some of it." I'm assuming you mean that there are several files which total well over 100 MB, so the player decides to take as much of them as they can and leave the rest? If it's a single file over 100 MB, you can't store it. Can't split up single files like that.
Player: "I want to download his entire music collection over here." GM: "It's several gigabytes large – no way you can download the whole thing. Maybe 20 or so songs at most." Player: "Fine. I'll just take 20 random songs/I'll take these specific songs/I'll take this album."

Hum. I think you're right - you would need to be able to see what is on it to figure out what to take.

Just think of it how you would do it on a normal computer. You first need to find the files you want to copy and then select them, then you can transfer them wherever.

But the spell doesn't give you the ability to read the files, right?

Nope. Once they are in your brain, they are inaccessible.

Does it give you the ability to read them before that though? Or do you need to look at them on the monitor and say "I'll be taking those files there"?

You need to manually use the computer, find the files you want and then cast the spell to download them into your brain. It's literally like using a normal USB drive except it's going into your head.

Some time when I'm not freaking out about other things I will try to get time to rewrite the description to say what you put above.

You take care of yourself first. Games can wait.

Can someone consolidate all of the crap into an updated spell description for this spell?

[This was the latest rendition. I just added in the little bit of information that we discussed on page 3 of this topic.]
Name: Johnny Range: Touch Casting Time: 3 Rounds MP Cost: 4 Duration: sunup/sundown or until overwritten/dumped/deleted
You can take a small amount of data (up to 100mb) from a computer (or device like one) and store it into your head. You must still find the data manually via whatever means you have – the spell only allows you to store data which you have direct access to. Think of it as a "cut and paste" feature on a normal computer, except you paste it into your head. It no longer exists in the previous vessel. You don't have access to it while it is in your brain. You can touch a different device and - if it has storage capacity - you can dump it in there by recasting the spell. This does not decrypt or make the data safe. While holding the data in your head you can only speak like a robot. If the GM thinks you're not, the data is corrupted. If you no longer want to keep the data or if the spell duration ends (or if you get dispelled, etc) the data is gone forever.

I think to make this extra spicy - if there is some sort of virus in the data, the GM may give you some sort of messed up virus.

If the data is magically protected (etc) this spell will automatically fail.
