Direction sense - that way is generally north. Also, if you go through some various tunnels (or a maze) underground, you can try to use this skill to generally say "I want to go in this general direction." Doing that works less well above ground where you want navigation. It allows you to move on various established routes (roads and shit) instead of 'this is the general direction toward the goal'. Also, if someone is using 'direction sense' they may say things like "Gosh, there is a big canyon here" where as the person with navigation would say "Yes, that is on the fucking map. We should have taken route 38 to go around it."
A simpler way of stating this might be 'direction sense is a compass in your head, navigation is a mini map - both together are super good'.

What about, for organisation's sake, renaming them to something likeā¦
Navigation (No Tools) Navigation (With Tools)
It will just make it a bit easier to see visually on the character sheet for players if the two are right next to each other. Maybe give With Tools a default skill value of 20 or something.

Kind of like how they work now. There is nothing that would not keep someone from sticking them next to each other on the character sheet without renaming them though.
I encourage people to make what ever sort of character sheet they want. Heck, it may even catch on and others might like it.

Fair enough. Are they being added in then?

Not sure if they are on the character sheet already or are write ins. Either way, I've been using them for years.

There is Navigation (Land) and Navigation (Sea/Air). Nothing else anywhere. Perhaps add it to the character sheet?

I'm OK with it being a write in. Most people don't seem to have a good sense of direction anyway but often think they do.
