Negatives and halves/quarters

The player must figure out if they are ‘using a strong attack’ or ‘fighting defensively’. Declare before you or the bad guys start rolling. If they are strongly attacking, their parry is at half/negative thirty. If they are fighting defensively, their attack is at half/negative thirty.

If your parry is, say, 10, and you attack "strongly," is your skill 5 or -20 (impossible without boosts)? Which takes precedent?

Parry (all): If the attack you are about to take is ruled to be ‘parry-able’ you completely negate the damage. The first attack you parry during a combat round you do at your full skill, the second incoming attack within the same round is parried at half skill and the third within the same round is parried at one quarter skill. Subsequent attacks may not be parried. Note, this works exactly the same way as ‘dodging’ (see Dexterity, above).

I'm confused. Which one do we use? I see no advantage in using strong/defensive over just normal.

If your parry is below 30, you attacking strongly is your norm. You're the guy who flails wildly at the target and doesn't try to parry. Which is good because your parry is too low to attack strongly and have any hope.

Normal is 'strong attack, screw the parry'. (There is no 'normal' that gives both full attack and full parry - it's more of a choice).


To build up parry (you only need to manage to get one parry per session which will be mind mindbogglingly dangerous until you can build up your skill to at least hobby level), I'd suggest always going in on full defense - especially when you have cards and maybe other people can toss a supporter card at you.

You will find (like any skill) if you keep trying to set up circumstances that allow you to get just one check per adventure that - after much pain and suffering - it will increase.

Guessing you were thinking they were all the same due to the old rules that were posted up on the rule page. Although I didn't go through and carefully check (trying to come up with campaign stuff currently) I did a quick run through to try to correct some of the more obvious 'old stuff'.

Okay, great. Thanks for clearing that up. So if your parry is 30 and you attack strongly, what are you rolling against when you parry? 0 or 15? I don't get the half/negative 30 thing.

Half or -30; it's always the player's choice. In that way, you have a tiny chance of pulling it off. So in this case you'd be rolling against 15.
