Walk on 'calm' water for 10 minutes. I imagine at the best being on a rough ocean would be much worse than a rough water bed which is horrible to try to walk on.

Let's say if you are on a rough ocean or something you need to make periodic Dexterity checks or something to keep your balance or you fall into the ocean and the spell ends. Let's face it – it would be pretty fun using this to surf a giant wave without a surfboard.

For that, I'd recommend the harder to do water ski on water spell.

It would be a different spell. Walk on calm water would be a lower level spell. We can add in that if the PC is on a river or something it will act like a conveyor belt moving them down river while they are on it. Hence, you could use this to cross a river but you'd be much further downstream afterward.

yeah, the exceptions are tiny... easier to name them and just blanket with animated is garbage
