Just a random idea that popped into my head as we were discussing the skills in the Facebook group.
Crit Points. You have 2 main categories: Spells and Abilities (Amber powers, matrix, etc). Whenever you crit a skill/spell, you gain 1 Crit Point (CP) towards that category. For example: if you crit a fire spell, you gain 1 CP in the fire school. If you crit a Pattern ability, you gain 1 CP in Pattern.
For spells: each spell after the first will have a certain CP cost. You can save up your CP to get any spell in the school, but if there are any "branches" going off, you have to start from the beginning of the branch. Example: you save up a bunch of CP in the fire school and decide to skip the first few spells and go straight for Fire Elemental Damage (the higher up the spell is, the more it will cost). Because this branches off into other, more powerful versions, you can only purchase the first skill. You must then continue to purchase each level up if you desire the more powerful versions.
For Abilities: works the same as spells, but you can ONLY get the next available ability that you have access to. You cannot skip several abilities ahead. Slower, yes, but at least you don't need to crit specific skills in order to advance. You can just continue practising your best Skill in hopes of getting more CP.
This would require an overhaul in terms of deciding how much each spell/ability would cost, but perhaps it would work better.
Just a thought. Obviously it can be refined.
