One of the ongoing beefs I have with writers (modules, books, etc) is lockpicking. Despite tons of youtube videos readily available, it seems the average person knows jack about locks.
An example from "Cthulhu Hardboiled 2 - The Shadow in the Tree": "Though the lock looks like it could take a fair amount of damage, it actually looks pretty simple as locks go. More to the point, it’s definitely been picked."
By what fairy magic can the PC's possibly deduce that? It is impossible to tell if a lock has been picked through examining it! Trying to use a key normally will leave more 'scratches on the exterior' than lockpicks.
And the amount of time it takes? "Less than a minute or the drill comes out" a locksmith friend of mine use to say. If the PC's have any idea what 'bumping' is, it takes about the same amount of time as using your house key.
Scary for home owners trying to tell the insurance company they locked the door.
So that is my rant on lockpicking and module writers.
