Whenever I make a new zone, I have a folder (called 'new zone') in Scrivener that I copy/paste to make a new zone. It includes the following general categories:
New zone name
Initial arrival
Opening scene for players getting into the zone for the first time.
Plots
These can range from linear plots to more sandbox style plots.
Interesting places
Self descriptive
NPC's
I don't start with many - this tends to grow organically. For me, I've found that starting with a bunch usually means I forget about them.
MacGuffins
Although these could be in the more strict sense, it can also include artifacts and such. Just special stuff that can be gotten in the zone.
Background
Any back story to the zone that I've come up with - often in the course of coming up with the zone. This may or may not ever be revealed to the players through NPC's and such, depending on if they care.
Magic/Tech/Special
How well magic, tech, other stuff works in this zone. May be simple or detailed, depending on the zone.
Timeline
Due to the nature of my campaigns ('Western Marches', episodic, strange) I generally don't focus much on the timeline but sometimes things will be going on in the future. If there are set things, they are put here.
Money/Wages/COL
Since each and every zone has it's own system of currency and costs for different things.
Gates out
These are also on the Scapple map but just in case I need to reference them again.
Ideas
Despite what Stephen King said about it, I do place some ideas here since I have 60+ hours of game play to fill each month.
Past Plots
I just drag any completed plots down here. These notes might come up again in the future if I am designing new plots or if I get another group of all new faces, something from here might get run. Hasn't happened in the last thousand hours of game play but I figure I will drop the plots here 'just in case'.
Future Plots
Another ideas bin.
Any suggestions for other potential folders?
