If you work on or create a new ability, just like with spells, you will get credit for it and get it at Learn. The only difference is that if you help create an entire "tree" (such as the Self Repair one), you only get the first skill at learn. The rest you will have to get normally.
Once you have reached the appropriate level in Trump, Pattern or Logrus, you will gain the ability to start making Artefacts. The "Create Artefact" node/ability, when critted, allows you to pick one thing that can go into your artefact. "Create Artefact" does NOTHING else – it is simply a means of gaining new things that you can put into your artefact. Each crit in this ability allows you to choose a new thing that you can put into your artefact. Here is a spreadsheet with all the different things you can choose. Please note that the "Base Spell Components" is only used for spells and is NOT relevant to artefact creation. Ignore it.
Major Magic Spreadsheet v0.2.ods (21.36 KB)
Once you gain an artefact skill, you can then continue practising that skill to unlock higher levels of that skill. In order to actually infuse this skill into an artefact, you must first choose what kind of thing you want your artefact to be – a sword, ring, suit of armour, etc. Once you have it, you can try to infuse the ability you want into the artefact by rolling the skill. You have one attempt per ability per session and once you've successfully infused something into the artefact, you can't do so again until your next session. In other words: if you fail to infuse something into your artefact, you can try infusing something else. Once you succeed, that's it for the session. No more infusing.
You can't have more than one type of Trump, Pattern or Logrus artefact. You can have several duplicates of the same artefact (i.e. you can have multiple lightning throwing knives) but they must all have the same properties and should be something that is somewhat logical to duplicate - throwing knives are a good example, swords are not (Ask GM if you're not sure). Refer to the spreadsheet above. If you learn an artefact skill, that same artefact skill works for all (Trump, Logrus, Pattern) artefacts - you don’t need to relearn the same skill. You also cannot have more than one duplicate of a "Companion" Critter (see spreadsheet and below).
You cannot ‘give away’ your artefact. It’s yours only, though it can help out other people if they are with you during the session and it has the skills to do so (example healing, etc). If someone steals your artefact, they can use it for the rest of the session then it disappears. It will respawn according to whichever respawn you have infused in it (default is 2 seasons). The same rule applies if you willingly destroy your artefact and wish to create a new one.
"Sentient" Artefacts/Critters
These work much like normal artefacts except for a few key differences.
- It must have at least 10 Willpower, Learn and Essence.
- It must be infused with any relevant skills, i.e. if you want your artefact to be able to see, you will need to infuse it with Spot Hidden. If you want it to hear, infuse it with Listen. If you want it to understand a language, infuse it with a language (see spreadsheet for details). EACH of these skills requires a separate crit for you to be able to infuse them.
- It must have at least a Rudimentary intelligence.
- It cannot know a higher level spell at a higher percentage than a lower level spell on the same tree. And it can only know petty magics. You teach it spells like you would normally (in this case you would be using the Skills% ability instead of "Teaching"), except the artefact cannot go up in a spell on its own. You have to teach it everything.
- You cannot have duplicates of a Companion Critter/Travel Companion. A Companion Critter is something that can follow you around and help you fight and defend you. You can, however, have up to 3 Companion Critters if you choose to have that as your 3 artefacts (assuming you have access to Logrus, Trump and Pattern artefact creation).
Everything else you need to know is in the spreadsheet. Hover over the abilities to find out more about them. There is a fair bit written there which isn't covered in this post.
