The bad thing (for people with homes, home owner's insurance, etc) is that they cannot prove 'hey, my door was lock picked'. The insurance company will just say "You didn't lock it, hence we won't pay."
IMO the best way to defend yourself against this (before the break in though most people won't do it till after if ever) is to get some cheap hidden cameras that go record on to the cloud somewhere. Then, when you do get robbed (hopefully never) you have something to prove you got broken in to - and the insurance company still will claim you left the door open. But maybe it can ID the thieves.
Lock picking is frightfully easy for those that study it (go go lock lore) and locks only dissuades amateurs and honest people.

After watching this, you don't need Lockpick, you can get away with Lock Lore + Jury Rig.

In fact, I just brought myself a set of lockpicks to give it a go. (And that probably put me on a watch list.)

Who would have thought knowing what you're doing would be so beneficial.
