I'm not sure why hexes and fives have anything to do with one another...

It only makes sense if you try working with them.

Or it's operator error.

So what scale did you settle on?

For the small map, 20km/square. For the 'wow, I've actually got a huge amount of space to work on'', 40km/square. It still works out nicely with the 'you can travel 40km per day on nice terrain' deal.
Though the land mass is really quite large. Clearly it's not all done. I'd prefer to have one good map packed with 'isn't this interesting' stuff rather than 'gosh the world is huge and boring'.
So I will probably be working on the world (one of them, anyway) for a good long time.

All this logistics talk makes me think we'll want undead mounts. There's a skill for that, right?

I'm thinking part of the secret of mapping is taking a long time doing it. And developing a shitload of stories.

News on the map.
Despite finding out how to make 'child maps' (pick an area and you can make each hex equal several within that map) I have decided to keep working with the 1 hex = a day of travel for the PC's on the nice road of 40km.
If I zoom in, the map looks fucking empty.
Having enough trouble filling up the larger scale without zooming in.
My goal is to have enough interesting stuff going on in enough hexes that exploration is interesting - for this slice of the world I'm working on.
I'm thinking of it as the 'freeform' spot.

Unfortunately, I have discovered for hex maps you have to increase by fives. Four hexes doesn't work right. Because of hexes. I figured out why you are saying you have to break by fives. Because the default child map in hexographer does so; however, it asks you when you make the child map how many hexes you'd like to break into, so there was no reason you couldn't have used any other number. Thanks for the program, by the way. I'm enjoying map making for my next campaign.
